WELSH JUNIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

The inaugural Realm/Globe Welsh Junior Open was held at Rest Bay, Porthcawl on 27th/28th October. The contest which was a British ranked event had 4 categories (Youth, Cadet, Junior and Junior Longboard) and attracted a good entry with surfers from Wales, Cornwall, Devon and the North East. The first day saw increasingly good swell and warm sunshine and there were some excellent performances in 2-4 foot surf. Standouts included Andrew Griffin and Josh Ward in the Cadets, Stephen Phillips, Simon Tuckett and Lloyd Cole in the Junior and Adam Thornton and Sam Burkett in the Youth.

Unfortunately although we kept the sun on Sunday the swell had dropped but after waiting a couple of hours there was a contestable wave on the incoming tide. We kicked off with the British finals postponed from the British National Championships and the Grommet victory went to Tom Butler while Harry Cromwell won the Youth title. Andrew Griffin took the British title for the Cadets. The finals of the Welsh Junior Open kicked off with Jake Keward comfortably winning the Junior Longboard in what was his last Junior contest. This was followed by the Under 14 final where Harry Cromwell failed to repeat his earlier victory and Sam Burkett came out on top. The Under 16 final saw Andrew Griffin add this title to the one he won earlier and in the all Welsh Junior final Lloyd Cole beat the opposition to become the first holder of the Junior title.
