The inaugural Globe/Realm Porthcawl open was held on Saturday 6th April, 2002 at Rest Bay in clean 3 foot waves. Due to the forecast for the Sunday it was decided to run the contest off in one day. Some of the standout erformances in the early heats were Colm Garrett of Llantwit Major, Greg Owen of Porthcawl, Sean Harris of Newquay and Josh Ward from Cornwall but the day belonged to local boy Jeremy Evans who made the most of his local knowledge to win the final ( and take home the winners £250 cheque) in great style. In second place was Mike Raven from Bude while Isaac Kibblewhite from Ogmore and Sean Harris were 3rd and 4th respectively. The BSA and the WSF would like to thank Welsh Coast Surf Club for underwriting the expenses for the event, Globe/Realm who provided the prize money, Brian Eynon for acting as Beach Marshall, Cat Thomson and his team of judges and everyone who entered.
